Treasure TROHV

September 15, 2011 by Elizabeth

This week, I arrived early for a meeting in Takoma Park and was so excited to happen upon TROHV.  TROHV first opened in Baltimore several years ago, but the Takoma Park store just opened a few months ago.

I’ve recently been enjoying Picker Sisters and their creative re-purposing of found items.  TROHV is part vintage, part found items, with a bit of Anthropolgie and Paper Source styling.

I felt like I would want to live in their store.  I am totally in love with this old cart!  I think it would be perfect in my house.

I’m so excited to try my first home restaurant this evening.  I’ve heard great things about this experience and have been wanting to go to one for over a year.  I was absolutely thrilled when I received an invitation to attend Sidra Forman‘s dinner tonight.  Sidra is an amazing woman with many talents.  I truly admire her ability to create and manage a business that logically intertwines all of her passions in life.  Below is a what was prepared at February’s dinner.  I think I’m in for a treat!

Bites of Chocolate

February 9, 2011 by Elizabeth

Last Fall when I was in Paris, I was on the lookout for the next “IT” trend.  Based on my trip, I guessed artisan chocolate shops.  All around town, I spied adorable boutiques with mouth-watering window displays and lines reaching out the door.  Some shops focused exclusively on chocolate, others covered all types of confections.

I love the fabulous design at Patisserie des Reves – a mix between a chic interior boutique and a chemistry lab.

The New York Times perfectly captured what I saw in this article today.

Paving the way here in DC are two chocolatiers worth checking out, especially with Valentine’s Day around the corner – CoCo Sala and Artisan Confections.

Mad for Mad Men

January 19, 2011 by Elizabeth

I know I’m a little behind the curve. I just started watching Mad Men last summer and, naturally, am now a huge fan.  From the incredible styling to the intriguing characters to the inner workings of the advertising world, it is a rich, visual parade that continually surprises me and keeps me entertained.

I wish I could have a living room like this one.

I love Joan’s bold, body-hugging looks and Betty’s ultra-stylish, feminine look.  The show may center around the ad men at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, but it’s the women who turn their heads.  It would be so incredible to have a whirl in the show’s costume closet!

Now you can fulfill your Mad Men fantasies right here in DC.  This year’s Spring Benefit for Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company takes its inspiration from the era and atmosphere so intriguingly portrayed in Mad Men.  Three Martini Lunch will be held April 16 at the Omni Shoreham hotel.  Early bird ticket specials are available now!

Around Town: A Girl’s Guide to Washington Politics

January 5, 2011 by Elizabeth

Over the weekend I went to see The Second City’s production of A Girl’s Guide to Washington Politics at Woolly Mammoth Theatre.  It is fabulous!  As you may know, The Second City has been the breeding ground for some of our best comedians – stars like Tina Fey, Mike Myers, Steve Carell, and Stephen Colbert.  If you like The Daily Show or The Colbert Report like me, then this show is for you.  The show ends this weekend, so hurry and buy your tickets now!

Wine Club

November 19, 2010 by Elizabeth

Tonight is the next gathering of my Wine Club.  A friend started this particular club about a year ago.  There are about 12-15 regulars, mostly women from the industry and other friends.  Here are the rules:

1)   Wines must be under $20

2)   The theme is selected by the winner from the previous gathering.

3)   The loser hosts.

4)   We do a blind tasting and then rank best to worst.

5)   Food is potluck.

Tonight, we will be sampling California Reds and a Thanksgiving-inspired menu.   I haven’t picked my wine yet, but I will be bringing one of my family’s more recent Thanksgiving favorites, Exotic Mushroom Bread Pudding by Emeril Lagasse.  This is a delicious alternative to the traditional stuffing.

Announcing the Arrival of…

November 5, 2010 by Elizabeth

Starting a business is like having a baby.  At least that’s what all of my friends who have had babies tell me.  I suppose there are some similarities, though.  I have spent months going over and over different questions.  What do I like about what I do? What would I like to change?  What would I want my new company to be like?  How would I differentiate myself within the industry?  Is this the right time to start a new business?  And then months making all of the plans.  First, there are the formalities, all the things that are needed to actually have a business – articles of incorporation, business licenses, insurance, etc.  Then there are the operations, all the thing that are needed to function as a business, which my mommy friends related to “nesting” – creating a home office, creating a brand, developing a web site, getting business cards, etc.  All of these things are tangible goals, ideas that I could easily wrap my head around.  The one thing that none of the books or blogs or friends prepared me for was determining the name of the company.  I believed that I needed a name that was creative, something that would encompass all that I am, the standards that I set for myself and my work and everything that I could ever hope my new company would become.  Of the small group of friends and family that I decided to talk to about the “right” name, there were some definite camps.  Some agreed with me, but others made very compelling arguments for simply using my own name.  After all, I had spent six years in the event planning industry and had built great relationships.   This decision was agonizing.  I tried everything I could think of to determine the process that would make the “right” name just appear in a moment of clarity.  Time alone, time with people, exhaustive Google searches (in multiple languages), being surrounded by creativity, being creative, going on vacation to one of my most loved places, France.  I wish I could say that I had a moment of clarity, and, perhaps in some small way, I did.  Of all of the creative, beautiful names I identified, not one jumped out and declared itself as “the one.”  Of all the processes I tried, none of them really worked.  It was on the plane ride home from France that I finally embraced the fact that I already had the perfect name, something that completely encompasses who I am and everything I want my new company to become.

So, without further ado, I’d like to introduce you to the new joy in my life:

I look forward to sharing more about what inspires me and the events that I am working on in the coming weeks!
