Washington Post: Nancy & Scott

I was so excited to see one of my January weddings featured in the Washington Post recently.  Nancy and Scott were an amazing couple to work with and we lucked out with a gorgeous, sunny day for their wedding.  One of my favorite things about this wedding was that Nancy’s wedding dress has been worn by every woman in her family since 1950.

Destination Costa Rica

Last week, my best friend and I flew down to Costa Rica for a few days to celebrate her birthday.  It was a spontaneous trip, so I went knowing very little about the country and what to expect.  I was overwhelmed by the abundant natural beauty, friendliness of the people and dramatic vistas from every turn.  The Costa Ricans have a saying “Pura Vida.”  Roughly translated, it means “pure life,” but I was told it also encompasses the idea of living full of life.  It’s a motto that resonates deeply with me.  They’ve made a drink by the same name and after a few of these, anyone would start to fantasize about moving to Costa Rica permanently.

Many of you may know that Costa Rica is considered a top honeymoon destination because it offers both serene, beautiful beaches (that many brides envision for their honeymoon) and fun activities (for the grooms).  Costa Rica has big brand resorts smaller, boutique resorts, as well as luxury vacation villas.  There are indulgent spa treatments and adrenaline-spiking outdoor adventures.  The wildlife is exotic and unique.  There really is something for everyone here!

I wanted to share just a few photos from my trip.   The sunsets alone are enough to get me back on a plane. Scroll down to see how Costa Rica inspired me to think about a destination wedding on the beach in Costa Rica.

My idea of a fabulous wedding in Costa Rica: a romantic, barefoot ceremony, bright vivid colors incorporating the driftwood and tropical flowers that abound in the area and, of course, dining and dancing under the stars.

A Sugar & Spice Baby Shower

Last weekend, I had the great pleasure of hostessing a baby shower for one of my good friends.  The other hostesses and I had so much fun thinking of how we could best honor our friend.  We decided upon a Sugar & Spice theme with a pink, yellow and orange color palette and subtle touches of elephants and polka dots (the Mommy’s choice for the nursery).  Our menu featured sweet and savory flavors and we incorporated baby clothes with elephants and polka dots as decor.  The adorable invitation was ordered from Tiny Prints and Etsy was the perfect place to find the cupcake toppers.  Everything came together perfectly for a fun, whimsical, and sophisticated baby shower!

Flexing the Creative Muscles: June Events

I love it when my clients come to me with an event that lets me use creative muscles in a new or different way.  This June, I was fortunate to have two great opportunities to work with clients to create interesting and unique theme parties.

Golf Chic

A previous wedding client wanted to take advantage of so many friends and family in town for the US Open Golf Tournament at Congressional Country Club and to celebrate the purchase of their new home in Georgetown.  The result, a “US Open House Party.”

Working with a palette of white, grass green and aqua blue, we created several unique spaces throughout the house for their guests to enjoy.  Vintage golf decor and golf themed signage added a special touch.  The hit of the party was certainly the “19th Hole” an Arnold Palmer & John Daly bar.

A special thanks to the vendors who helped make it such a success: Occasions Caterers, Capital Décor & Events, AFR Furniture and Meant to Be Calligraphy.

Pirate’s Invade Great Falls

For the second year in a row I was asked to help my client plan their annual Pirate Party.  This family friendly party included several special guests, including an amazing balloon artist, incredibly talented tattoo artist and an insightful fortune teller.  The feature entertainment was Pirate Michael Beans from the British Virgin Islands.

Thanks so much to the vendors who contributed to the party’s success: Skyline Tents, Occasions Caterers, Bialeks and AFR Furniture.

What to Expect in 2011: Interior Design Trends

Anticipation

I’ve always said that, for me, anticipation is over 50% of the experience.  I’m so excited for all of my fabulous June events, but one in particular has been absolutely amazing to design.  When my client first contacted me about helping her plan her engagement party and mentioned words like French, garden, romantic, and vintage, I could hardly contain myself.  As you may have figured out from some of my previous posts, I’m a huge Francophile and I love designing beautiful and unique events.  I hope to be able to share some photos after the party, but here’s a little tease of inspiration boards I designed for the event.
